It was bizarre how quickly everything changed when the pandemic hit. One day we were still commuting to work, thinking masks were something for surgeons and extreme hypochondriacs. The next day we were hoarding toilet paper, all putting on masks, and setting up an awkward home office that was supposed to be temporary.
The pandemic changed everything. Looking back, it is incredible how quickly we adapted to the new situation. Humans are social beings. We like to have coffee with colleagues to talk about work and life. Virtual meetings are different from sitting together in the same room. It gives a different energy. And that was quite a challenge for all of us.
So it was right that managers and board members sometimes feared the worst. After all, how do you keep productivity high if everyone is sitting at home? And how on earth can people work well together if they are not sitting next to each other?
Companies were afraid of losing sales and had to adjust business processes to the new situation as quickly as possible in an extremely uncertain time; everything had to be done remotely. But how do you do that? How do you enable a new normal in no time?
Now, almost two years on, companies and employees alike have embraced hybrid work. People love rolling right out of bed, making coffee and working from their home offices. And companies discovered that - with the right strategy and tooling - they can be very productive and successful.
Hybrid working is here to stay and it's going to bring us all many great things. But it won't happen by itself. Because as a company, how do you ensure that your people can work together safely anytime, anywhere? How do you empower your employees with all the possibilities of the new way of working and how do you ensure ever higher productivity?
