Why Jochen does not want to leave ‘The Den’ of Arxus yet

Strong interns become valuable employees: the hobbyhorse of Arxus. Year after year, various interns get their first taste of the professional world at our company. Does that whet the appetite for more on both sides? Then we like to reward them with a contract. Jochen Dierckx, who will join us in September, is living proof of that. Read on and discover why Jochen isn’t ready to leave ‘The Den’ – the Customer Ops office space at Arxus – anytime soon.

We at Arxus believe in offering (final year) students the opportunity to take the final steps in their school career as an intern. In 2023, Jochen, who made a very conscious choice for Arxus, was also considered.

“I first filtered out the interesting internship assignments from the list that we were given at school (AP University of Applied Sciences and Arts Antwerp). Since my interests are mainly in Cloud and Security, I further refined that selection into three assignments,” says Jochen. “Then I went to talk to several companies. Arxus emerged as the most appealing to me, precisely because of their extensive experience in mentoring interns.”

Azure Advisor

Jochen’s thirst for Cloud knowledge didn’t allow him to stay idle. “My internship assignment was centred on Azure Advisor, a tool that provides useful recommendations and advice for maximising the efficiency of your Azure workloads,” Jochen continues. “You can fix or waive the recommendations and advice from Advisor, but it demands considerable work and effort to do it manually. That's why I created a tool that can automatically perform waive actions and thus save a lot of time.”

‘The Den’ of Arxus

To get up to speed as quickly and effectively as possible, Jochen soon spent a lot of time in a special room within our office. “To orient myself at the start, I thought it would be helpful to sit in ‘The Den’. There I sat, surrounded by individuals engaged in similar tasks, which made it easy and quick to ask questions,” explains Jochen with a chuckle, referring to the location of Customer Ops, Arxus’s second-line team that handles customer tickets.

“I encountered a few specific elements and applications such as Powershell code and Terraform for Infrastructure as Code (IaC), which were completely new to me. I have watched and studied many tutorials, but of course, I also had to ask a lot of questions. For this, I could also go outside ‘The Den’, usually to Thijs (Hereygers, internship mentor), Philip (Van de Vyver, Powershell and Terraform expert), and Kybo (van Prooijen, supporting expert). For every question, there is someone with expertise at Arxus.”

Once in ‘The Den’, always in ‘The Den’

As icing on the cake, Jochen’s hard work was rewarded with a contract at Arxus. On top of that, ‘The Den’ also remains his home base, because he will work for us within the Customer Ops team.

“I have the feeling that I can start with a head start at Arxus precisely because I also did my internship here. I know what Arxus does and aims to achieve on both the technical and employee level, and I’m aware that there’s still much for me to learn in the process,” Jochen concludes. “I look back with satisfaction on a successful internship period and look forward to the next chapter of my adventure at Arxus.”
